Open Finals Day(s) 2023
29 July 2023The 2023 Lytham Tennis Club Open Tennis Championships was a thrilling event that showcased some of the best tennis skills and sportsmanship in the region. On the 9th of July blue skies, sunshine, and immaculate grass courts greeted an excited crowd and our talented finalists. First up on centre court were Willow and Rebecca competing for the women’s singles crown. Two friends, one trophy! Who would be the Queen of the court? After some exciting tennis, congratulations go to Willow.
For the men’s title the defending champion Steve faced the young sensation Harry, in a classic contest of experience vs youth! Who would come out on top? This clash of generations did not disappoint, a thrilling match that showcased the best of both worlds. From the very start play was intense, with the savvy veteran drawing on his vast match play experience to neutralise the energy of the younger player and taking the first set 6-4.
The second set was sensational with four games going to deuce point! While the crowds lapped up the sunshine, the players continued to battle in the sweltering heat. Steve pushed Harry from corner to corner, but the young Harry would not be beaten. This was now a test of both skill and stamina. Harry clicked up the points and took the second set 6-2.
Steve and Harry gave it their all in the final set, but the winning momentum was with Harry. Now a tiring Steve was defending against an increasingly energetic Harry. As the match approached its exciting conclusion it was Harry dominating the court and he comfortably won the final set 6-3. Congratulations to Harry for clinching the men’s crown.
The drama and excitement of the tournament did not end there, as within a few minutes the heavenly blue skies were replaced with thunderstorms. Unfortunately, the doubles matches had to be cancelled due to very heavy rain. Thank you to all the players, spectators, and volunteers who made this event possible. We hope you had a great time and enjoyed the incredible tennis.
The Open mixed doubles finals was finally played after being rained off previously. It was a great match to watch with many long rallies. Steph and Johnny triumphed over Olivia and Marc in the end. Congratulations!
