About Us
Club History
Tennis first started in Lytham in the Victorian era when Lawn Tennis became extremely popular, especially with the ladies. However, it wasn’t until the early 1970’s that Lytham Tennis Club became a separate entity when two hard courts were built to complement the grass courts. The small tennis pavilion was actually built in 1885 and had a dormer added in the 1960’s to accommodate the cricket scoreboard.
In the early 1970’s Lytham Tennis Club became a constituent part of Lytham Cricket & Sports Club and at that time two all-weather courts were built. During the 1990’s these two courts were renovated on a number of occasions and in 2008 they were converted, together with two grass courts into floodlit, artificial grass courts. Since then, 2 more carpet courts have been built and an inflatable dome covers 2 courts during the winter.
Leagues
The Club has entered both Senior and Junior teams in the Fylde League since the early 1970’s and has also entered various County and Regional Cup competitions.
There have been many divisional league successes over the years including the Ladies winning the Lancashire Ralph Bint trophy and a mixed team reaching the North West finals of the Silk Cup.
Currently, both the Ladies and the Men’s 1st teams play in Division 1 of the Fylde League.
We also play mixed tennis in the Ribble League.
Club Committee
The Club is run by a Committee of elected and co-opted members and in January 2008 the Club achieved Clubmark status.
A separate committee organises a wide range of quality social events and these are very well supported.
The club is financially sound and operates a strict system of budgetary control.
Monies are transferred annually to a sinking fund in order to ensure that facilities can be refurbished and renewed, as required.
Membership and Coaching
The Club has a variety of membership categories and periodically it becomes necessary to close one or more categories owing to high demand. Subscriptions rates are reviewed annually and a joining fee is levied on new members.
The Club has a range of competitive and social tennis programmes and is lucky to have a full time resident Coach, Greg Porter. Please see the CLUB COACHES page of the website for further information.
We have a large number of Senior and Junior teams that participate in the Fylde summer league. As well as Open and Handicapped Tournaments the Club also holds a number of Social American Tournaments during the summer season.
Internal winter competitions are very popular and over 70 people regularly compete in these round robin events.
